This gallery showcases panoramic images.  The dictionary defines panorama as “a wide unbroken view of a surrounding region.”  In the world of photography there is no formal definition of what defines a panoramic image, although it is generally accepted that the image should have an aspect ratio of at least 2:1, or twice as long as it is high.  There are a number of cameras made that specifically produce such an image.  These cameras are usually of medium format design, using medium format 120/220 film and have a wide angle lens, exposing what would normally be two to three times the normal 6x6 cm area of a single exposure.  The resulting image is therefore somewhere in the 6cm by 12-17 cm range.

Using a large format (4x5 inch) camera gives the photographer the ability to crop an image to the same dimensions without losing the detail gained in the larger format to begin with. A 4x5 inch transparency translates into roughly a 10x12.5 cm image area, so it is quite easy to crop the height (or width for a vertical shot) down to 6 centimeters and use the full width of just over 12 cm to achieve the 2:1 aspect ratio.  The images in this gallery have been cropped to produce an enlarged print of 10 x 22 inches or 20 x 44 inches.
